Prompt Cartography is the educational companion site for learning how to design, critique, and revise AI-assisted maps with cartographic judgment intact.

Purpose

This site supports the book Prompt Cartography: Interactive Map Design with LLMs with open learning materials, classroom-ready resources, and outreach examples that make the method easier to teach, practice, and discuss.

For lifelong learners, there are labs, examples, and reusable resources.

For formal instructors and their students, use this site for course adoption, resources, labs, rubrics, discussion questions, and supplemental teaching materials.

New learning materials will continue to be added over time. Thank you for visiting!

Part of the same program

Prompt Cartography is part of the NLGIS.ai ecosystem. WebMapGPT is part of the same program, but it is less about learning the method and more about live maps, assistants, demos, experiments, and a campaign archive.

About Ian Muehlenhaus

Ian Muehlenhaus currently resides in a pine forest in flyover country USA. He is a former cartography professor, the former Director of GIS Professional Programs at the University of Wisconsin – Madison, and currently a Principal Product Engineer working at Esri.

His research focuses on building natural language GIS tools, LLM-based tools for cartography, persuasive cartography, web map design, and information physics theory and geography.
