Map Design Lab (Beta) field guide
This lab lets you experiment with map design styles the way a musician might mix samples. Pick a few map styles, compare their colors and type, adjust their influence, then export a style schema you can paste into an AI prompt or save for later.
The Map Styles Library is the style shelf. Each card shows a palette, common fonts, a short theme, and a dog-eared corner. Click a card to flip it and read more. Use Demo to preview the map, Edit to read the Markdown or JSON, or Mix It Up to send that style into a map slot.
The mixer starts with only the next useful slots visible so the page does not turn into a scroll trap. Add style A, then B appears. Add B, then C appears. You can stop at two styles, three styles, or go all the way to four.
Influence is zero-sum. That means all loaded styles share 100 percent. If one style goes up, the unlocked styles go down. Lock a style when you like its percentage and want the other sliders to work around it.
The teal side handle opens the Manual Overrides panel. Use it to tweak the shared palette, add or remove fonts, and inspect the mixed style DNA. These changes automatically update the style schema.
Markdown is just readable text. JSON is structured text for tools. If that sounds like soup, do not worry. The practical move is simple: copy the final style schema and paste it into your map-making prompt.
The Export New Map Style tab gives you the final style schema. You can edit the text before copying or downloading. The provenance and Prompt Cartography license notes travel with the export so the sources stay visible.
That is the whole idea: remix map tropes, learn why they work, and make something new without pretending it came from nowhere.
